An Edinburgh wedding photographer's twelve favourite locations

Edinburgh is small enough that every wedding photographer eventually shoots at most of its venues. The list below isn't ordered by prestige — it's ordered by photographic yield. Which is to say: how reliably the location produces frames the couple will still want on the wall in a decade.

Ceremony venues

• 01Mansfield Traquair — the painted ceiling does the work for you; underexpose by half a stop and let the murals carry the image.
• 02The Signet Library — wide-angle on a 24mm, shot from the upper gallery. The most-photographed library in Scotland for good reason.
• 03Lothian Chambers — overlooked, civic, beautifully proportioned. The light at 3pm in October is among the best in the city.
• 04Greyfriars Kirk — for the kirkyard at golden hour, more than the ceremony itself.

Reception venues that photograph well

• 01Prestonfield House — the peacocks are a cliché, but the drawing room interiors are not.
• 02The Caves — bring fast glass. The stone soaks light, which is the whole point.
• 03The Royal Botanic Garden — the Glasshouse at dusk is the single best reception light in the city.
• 04Timberyard — book the courtyard for the first hour of the reception, not the dining room.

Outdoor spots within ten minutes of the centre

• 01Calton Hill, north side — most photographers go for the Acropolis. Walk three minutes further and you'll have it to yourself.
• 02Dean Village — overrun on Saturdays. Worth the early arrival.
• 03Princes Street Gardens at the foot of the Castle — early morning only.
• 04Cramond at low tide — the causeway gives you a wide-open horizon ten minutes from George Street.
