Studying Photography at University in Scotland: What I Wish I Knew

The four serious options in Scotland

  • 01Edinburgh College of Art — fine art / conceptual focus, strong critique culture
  • 02Glasgow School of Art — interdisciplinary, design-led, strong industry links
  • 03Edinburgh Napier University — technical and commercial, more vocational
  • 04Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen — strong commercial and editorial pipeline

What a portfolio needs to show

Admissions tutors want to see thinking, not gear. A coherent body of 10–15 images on one subject beats 60 unconnected pretty pictures. Print your work. Sequence it. Be ready to talk about why you made each choice.

What university will not teach you

  • 01How to price a wedding so you make a profit
  • 02How to write a usage licence that holds up
  • 03How to back up 80,000 files a year without losing one
  • 04How to handle a bride whose father has just died the week before the wedding

Those are the things this Learn section exists for. University gives you the language and the eye. The trade is learned by working.
