Factory photography overseas — why the 'made in' story sells more than the product shot
Commissioned documentation of manufacturing in Europe and Asia — why brands are investing in factory imagery, and what a photographer actually does on a factory floor.

The single biggest shift in product photography over the last three years is not technical — it is narrative. Brands that used to commission a white-background hero shot and three lifestyle frames now want the story of how the thing is made. The factory floor has become part of the campaign.
Ross has documented manufacturing in Portugal, Morocco, Italy and the Far East for Scottish and UK brands with overseas supply chains. The brief is almost always the same: show the craft, show the people, show the conditions — without making an advert.
What factory photography actually covers
- 01The raw material frame — leather hides, timber, metal, fibre. The origin image.
- 02The hand-work frame — stitching, cutting, assembly, finishing. The human detail.
- 03The QC frame — inspection, measurement, rejection. The precision moment.
- 04The environment frame — light, scale, order or chaos. The context shot.
- 05The dispatch frame — packed, labelled, leaving. The final image before travel.
Why it works for brand storytelling
An image of a product being made carries more information than the product alone. It signals quality control, ethical production, longevity and care. In an ESG report, it is evidence. In a campaign, it is proof. On an investor deck, it is differentiation.
How a factory commission runs
A typical factory documentation runs over two to four days. Day one is arrival, scout and relationship — meeting the floor manager, understanding the workflow, identifying the moments that repeat. Days two and three are capture, working around production schedules, natural light windows, and the reality that most factories are not lit for photography. Day four is the departure frame and the final interview portrait with a maker.
Delivered as a graded image library with clear captions, metadata, and usage rights pre-cleared. The whole edit is treated with the same discipline as a campaign — because to the brand, it is.
