Scottish Borders Wedding Photographer
Ross Nixon Photography provides editorial and documentary wedding coverage throughout the Scottish Borders. Based in Edinburgh, I deliver high-end, honest imagery for couples across Kelso, Melrose, and Peebles.
The Scottish Borders offers a distinct landscape for wedding photography, moving away from the rugged Highlands toward rolling hills and expansive agricultural estates. My approach to photography in this region is grounded in realism. I avoid overly processed filters, focusing instead on the light as it actually falls and the genuine interactions between people. Whether you are planning a large-scale event at a private country house or a smaller ceremony in one of the historic border towns, my work prioritises the narrative of the day. I operate with a quiet presence, ensuring that the documentation of your wedding does not override the experience itself. You get a set of images that look like your wedding, not a staged photoshoot.

Questions people ask
- How long do you stay at the wedding?
- I provide full-day coverage. This usually means starting two hours before the ceremony for preparation shots and staying until approximately thirty minutes after the first dance. I want to capture the full story of the day, including the evening celebrations, rather than leaving immediately after the main formalities are over. This ensures the final gallery feels complete and representative of the entire event.
- Do you charge extra for travel to the Borders?
- No, I do not charge additional travel expenses for weddings located within the Scottish Borders. Based in Edinburgh, I am within easy reach of towns like Peebles, Galashiels, and Kelso. The cost quoted in your initial enquiry is all-inclusive of my time and travel, so there are no unexpected costs added to your final invoice after the wedding is finished.
- How many photos will we receive?
- For a full-day wedding in the Borders, you can expect to receive between 400 and 600 edited images. This number varies depending on the length of the ceremony and the scale of the guest list. I focus on quality over sheer volume, removing duplicate shots or blinks to ensure that every image in your final gallery is of a professional, editorial standard.
- What happens if it rains on our wedding day?
- Rain is a common factor when working in Scotland. I carry professional lighting equipment to create high-quality portraits indoors if the weather prevents us from going outside. Most Borders venues have excellent interior spaces that work well for photography. If there is a break in the weather, we can head out for five or ten minutes to use the landscape, but the rain never stops us from getting great results.
- Can we request specific group photos?
- Yes. While my style is primarily documentary, I recognise the importance of formal family photographs. I ask for a short list of about 8 to 10 key groups before the day. We usually complete these in 20 minutes, which keeps the process efficient and allows you to get back to the reception. I handle these shots professionally and quickly to avoid disrupting the flow of the afternoon.
