Edinburgh Headshot Photographer

Ross Nixon Photography provides high-end, editorial headshots across Edinburgh for business leaders and creatives. Professional portraits are captured on-location or at my city centre studio session space.

A professional headshot is your digital handshake. Most people hate having their photo taken, but my approach is built on removing that awkwardness. Whether you need a fresh profile for LinkedIn, a new set of actor headshots, or a consistent look for your entire corporate team, I provide clean, honest photography that avoids the stiff, dated poses of old-school high street studios. We can work at your office to minimise downtime for your staff, or you can come to my studio space. I focus on natural light where possible, mixed with subtle strobe work to ensure you look like yourself on a good day, not a polished mannequin. No gimmicks, just well-composed, high-resolution portraits that serve your professional reputation.

What's included

Every headshot session is designed to deliver a specific set of assets for your professional use. You get a set amount of time in front of the lens where we work through different angles and expressions to find what works best for your face. I provide a digital gallery of high-resolution images, edited for colour, contrast, and clarity. Standard retouching is included, which means I take care of temporary skin blemishes or stray hairs without making you look over-processed or unnatural. You receive full commercial usage rights, so you can use the files across your website, social media, and press releases without worry. I also include web-optimised versions of every shot, so you don't have to deal with oversized files when uploading to your profile. If we are shooting a corporate team, I ensure uniform lighting and backgrounds so that the 'Team' page on your website looks cohesive and deliberate rather than a mix of mismatched mobile phone snaps and holiday crops.

How it works

The process starts with a conversation about what you need the images for. A law firm in the New Town requires a different aesthetic to a creative agency in Leith. We agree on a date and a location, whether that is on-site at your workplace or at my studio. During the shoot, I provide clear direction to help you feel comfortable. I don't expect you to know what to do with your hands or how to tilt your head; that is my job to manage. After the session, I shortlist the best frames and upload them to a private online proofing gallery. You select your final favourites for retouching. Once the final edits are complete, usually within 48 to 72 hours for individual sessions, you receive a link to download the high-resolution files. It is straightforward, efficient, and fits into a busy working day.

Local detail

I operate across the entirety of Edinburgh, from the corporate hubs around Morrison Street and the Exchange District to the creative workspaces in Leith and Newhaven. If you are based in EH1, EH2, or EH3, I can easily walk to your office with a portable lighting setup. For those outside the city centre, I am often working at the creative hubs around Summerhall near the Meadows or the Shore in Leith, which is roughly a 20-minute tram ride from Princes Street. I am familiar with the light conditions in the New Town's grand Georgian offices and the more challenging, darker buildings in the Old Town near the Royal Mile. If we are doing environmental portraits outside, we might use the backdrop of Calton Hill or the architectural lines around the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood. I know the city well and can suggest specific spots that match the tone of your brand, ensuring the background provides context without being a distraction.

Questions people ask

What should I wear for my headshot?
Stick to solid colours and avoid busy patterns or large logos that distract from your face. Well-fitted clothes are essential; baggy garments don't translate well on camera. If you are a corporate professional, bring your standard suit or blazer. For creatives, layers work well. I recommend bringing a couple of options so we can see what looks best against the background on the day.
How long does a session take?
Individual sessions usually last between 30 to 60 minutes. This provides enough time to settle in, try a couple of outfits, and adjust the lighting. For corporate teams, I can work to a tighter schedule, often shooting staff in 10-15 minute slots to ensure I get through the whole office without significantly disrupting the working day.
Can you come to our office?
Yes, I frequently work on-location. I bring all the necessary portable lighting and can set up a backdrop in a meeting room or use your office environment as the background. This is the most efficient way to photograph multiple staff members. For clients in EH1 to EH12, I don't charge travel fees for on-site sessions.
How quickly will I get my photos?
The proofing gallery is usually sent within 24 hours of the shoot. Once you have selected your final images for retouching, the turnaround time is typically 48 hours. I understand that many clients have tight deadlines for press releases or website launches, so I work quickly to get the final files into your hands.
Do you offer group photos as well?
Yes, I can include team or group shots as part of a corporate headshot booking. We can discuss the best location for this, whether it is in a boardroom, a foyer, or an outdoor spot nearby. I ensure everyone is positioned correctly and that the lighting remains consistent with your individual headshots for a professional look across the board.
