Edinburgh Food Photographer
Ross Nixon Photography provides editorial food and drink imagery for Edinburgh restaurants and producers. I deliver high-quality, practical assets for menus and marketing with a straightforward, professional approach.
The food scene in Edinburgh moves fast. Whether you are running a restaurant on Thistle Street or a bakery in Leith, you need photography that actually looks like the food you serve. I do not do over-glamorised, fake setups. I create clean, editorial images that show off the texture of the bread, the colour of the sauce, and the atmosphere of the room. I work with chefs and owners across the city to build a library of images that work on a website, a physical menu, and social media. I understand the pressure of a service window, so I work quickly and stay out of the way of your staff while getting the shots needed to fill seats.

Questions people ask
- Do you bring your own props?
- I focus on editorial realism, so I prefer to use the plates, linens, and surfaces that are actually used in your restaurant. This ensures the photos are an authentic representation of the customer experience. If you have specific requirements for a commercial campaign, we can discuss hiring a food stylist or sourcing specific props, but usually, your own inventory provides the most honest results.
- How long does a food shoot take?
- A typical half-day session lasts four hours. This is usually enough time to capture a new seasonal menu of ten to fifteen dishes, along with some wide shots of the interior and a few action shots of the chef. For larger menus or a complete brand overhaul including staff portraits, I recommend a full-day booking to ensure we have enough time to manage the lighting for different setups.
- Can you shoot in dark restaurants?
- Yes. Many of the best restaurants in Edinburgh are in historic buildings with limited natural light. I use professional off-camera flash and modifiers to create soft, natural-looking light that mimics a bright window. This means we can shoot at any time of day, even in winter or in basement venues, without sacrificing the quality or the 'natural' feel of the food photography.
- When will I receive my photos?
- I aim to deliver the full, edited gallery within five to seven working days. If you have an urgent press release or a social media launch, I can often provide a couple of 'sneak peek' images within 24 hours of the shoot. All images are delivered via a secure digital gallery where you can download them in multiple sizes for different uses.
- Do you photograph drinks and cocktails too?
- Absolutely. Beverage photography requires a different approach to lighting to manage reflections and glass transparency, but it is a standard part of my food and drink service. Whether it is a pour shot of a local gin or a complex cocktail with garnish, I have the equipment and experience to make your drinks menu look as good as your food.
