Aberdeen Food Photographer

Ross Nixon Photography provides high-end editorial food and beverage imagery for brands in Aberdeen. We deliver professional menu, hospitality, and product photography designed for commercial use and social media.

In a city defined by its proximity to both fertile farmland and the North Sea, the quality of raw ingredients in Aberdeen is exceptional. For restaurant owners and food producers across the Granite City, the challenge lies in translating that physical quality into a digital format that drives bookings and sales. I provide a straightforward, no-nonsense approach to food photography that focuses on textures, lighting, and realistic plating. Whether you are running a seafood kitchen near the harbour or a modern bistro on Union Street, your visual output needs to match the standard of your kitchen. My work avoids the over-saturated, artificial look often seen in basic stock images, opting instead for an editorial style that feels authentic to the venue and the dish.

What's included

Every food session in Aberdeen is built around a specific brief to ensure the final gallery serves your marketing goals. A standard booking includes a pre-shoot consultation where we discuss the menu items, the desired aesthetic, and any specific requirements for output formats such as landscape for websites or portrait for Instagram reels and stories. On the day, I bring professional lighting equipment suited to the environment, whether that is a dimly lit basement bar or a bright, window-fronted cafe. I handle the styling of each plate to ensure it looks appetising while remaining honest to what the customer will actually receive. Post-production is a critical part of the process; I perform detailed retouching to correct colour balances and remove any minor imperfections. The final high-resolution files are delivered via a secure digital gallery with full commercial usage rights, allowing you to use the imagery across your website, printed menus, and third-party delivery platforms without additional licensing fees. I ensure the turnaround is efficient, typically delivering the completed set within seven working days of the shoot.

How it works

The process begins with an enquiry regarding your menu size and the location of your business. I provide a fixed quote based on either a half-day or full-day session. Once the date is secured, we finalise the shot list. During the shoot, I work systematically through the dishes, often tethering to a laptop so you can review images in real-time. This collaboration ensures the styling meets your brand standards before the plate leaves the table. Following the session, I select the best frames for editing. You receive a curated selection of images that tell the story of your food, from the raw ingredients and kitchen preparation to the finished dish under the lights. My workflow is designed to be minimally intrusive to your daily operations, often shooting during prep hours or on days when the kitchen is closed to the public.

Local detail

Aberdeen has a distinct culinary identity that requires a tailored photographic approach. Capturing the silver-grey granite backdrops of the West End requires careful management of light to ensure the food remains the focal point rather than getting lost in the shadows. I am familiar with the logistical requirements of shooting in various Aberdeen districts, from the tight spaces of the Merchant Quarter to the larger industrial units in Altens or Bridge of Don where many food producers are based. Whether you are showcasing Aberdeen Angus beef from a local butcher or fresh catch from the Peterhead markets served in a Footdee establishment, I understand the importance of provenance in this region. My experience includes working with various independent operators along Rosemount Viaduct and the thriving coffee culture on Belmont Street. I bring a local understanding of the Aberdeen market, knowing that the audience here values substance and quality. I am mobile across the city and wider Aberdeenshire, providing on-site services that eliminate the need for you to transport fragile dishes or perishable goods to a remote studio environment.

Questions people ask

Do you provide props and backdrops for the shoot?
I carry a selection of neutral backdrops and basic styling tools to every Aberdeen shoot. However, the most effective food photography usually utilises your own tableware, linens, and surfaces to maintain brand consistency. If a specific aesthetic is required that falls outside your current inventory, we can discuss sourcing specific props during our initial consultation to ensure the results align with your vision.
How long does a typical food photography session take?
The duration depends on the complexity of the dishes and the length of the shot list. A half-day session is typically sufficient for 6 to 10 finished plates including some lifestyle or interior shots. If you require a full menu refresh or extensive action shots of the kitchen staff, a full-day booking is more appropriate to ensure we do not rush the styling of each plate.
Can you shoot during service hours?
While it is possible to shoot 'candid' style images during service, for high-end menu photography, it is best to shoot when the kitchen is not at peak capacity. This allows the chef to focus on plating for the camera and gives us room to set up lighting without obstructing staff or customers. I usually recommend a morning slot before the lunch rush or a dedicated prep day.
Do I own the copyright to the images?
As the creator, I retain the copyright, but I grant you a comprehensive commercial licence. This allows you to use the images for any marketing purpose related to your business, including social media, third-party delivery apps like Deliveroo, billboards, and your own website. There are no ongoing fees or expiry dates on this licence, giving you full freedom to use the assets indefinitely.
What happens if I need to cancel or move the shoot?
I understand that kitchen staff issues or ingredient delivery delays can happen. I offer a flexible rescheduling policy provided at least 48 hours' notice is given. My goal is to work as a partner to your business, so I try to accommodate changes where my calendar allows. A deposit is typically required to secure your date, which can be transferred to a new booking if the move is within reason.
