Aberdeen Food Photographer
Ross Nixon Photography provides high-end editorial food and beverage imagery for brands in Aberdeen. We deliver professional menu, hospitality, and product photography designed for commercial use and social media.
In a city defined by its proximity to both fertile farmland and the North Sea, the quality of raw ingredients in Aberdeen is exceptional. For restaurant owners and food producers across the Granite City, the challenge lies in translating that physical quality into a digital format that drives bookings and sales. I provide a straightforward, no-nonsense approach to food photography that focuses on textures, lighting, and realistic plating. Whether you are running a seafood kitchen near the harbour or a modern bistro on Union Street, your visual output needs to match the standard of your kitchen. My work avoids the over-saturated, artificial look often seen in basic stock images, opting instead for an editorial style that feels authentic to the venue and the dish.

Questions people ask
- Do you provide props and backdrops for the shoot?
- I carry a selection of neutral backdrops and basic styling tools to every Aberdeen shoot. However, the most effective food photography usually utilises your own tableware, linens, and surfaces to maintain brand consistency. If a specific aesthetic is required that falls outside your current inventory, we can discuss sourcing specific props during our initial consultation to ensure the results align with your vision.
- How long does a typical food photography session take?
- The duration depends on the complexity of the dishes and the length of the shot list. A half-day session is typically sufficient for 6 to 10 finished plates including some lifestyle or interior shots. If you require a full menu refresh or extensive action shots of the kitchen staff, a full-day booking is more appropriate to ensure we do not rush the styling of each plate.
- Can you shoot during service hours?
- While it is possible to shoot 'candid' style images during service, for high-end menu photography, it is best to shoot when the kitchen is not at peak capacity. This allows the chef to focus on plating for the camera and gives us room to set up lighting without obstructing staff or customers. I usually recommend a morning slot before the lunch rush or a dedicated prep day.
- Do I own the copyright to the images?
- As the creator, I retain the copyright, but I grant you a comprehensive commercial licence. This allows you to use the images for any marketing purpose related to your business, including social media, third-party delivery apps like Deliveroo, billboards, and your own website. There are no ongoing fees or expiry dates on this licence, giving you full freedom to use the assets indefinitely.
- What happens if I need to cancel or move the shoot?
- I understand that kitchen staff issues or ingredient delivery delays can happen. I offer a flexible rescheduling policy provided at least 48 hours' notice is given. My goal is to work as a partner to your business, so I try to accommodate changes where my calendar allows. A deposit is typically required to secure your date, which can be transferred to a new booking if the move is within reason.
