Isle of Skye Elopement Photographer

Ross Nixon Photography provides honest, editorial elopement coverage on the Isle of Skye. Focused on the landscape and the reality of the day, I offer packages from £395 for couples eloping in the Highlands.

Eloping to the Isle of Skye is about leaving the noise behind. It is one of the most rugged parts of Scotland, and it requires a photographer who understands the terrain and the weather. Whether you are planning a ceremony at the foot of the Black Cuillin or on the cliffs of Neist Point, the focus should be on the location and your connection to it. I do not do staged, overly romanticised poses. I document the day as it happens, including the wind, the rain, and the scale of the scenery. Skye is a five-hour drive from my base in Edinburgh, but the results from locations like the Quiraing or the Fairy Glen are worth the travel for any couple prioritising a quiet, meaningful wedding.

What's included

My elopement photography is designed to be simple. You get my time on the ground, high-resolution digital files, and a private online gallery. There are no watermarks on your images and no hidden fees for downloading your own photos. I provide a mix of wide-angle shots to capture the full scale of the Skye landscape and tighter, editorial portraits that focus on the details of your day. The coverage is flexible; some couples want two hours for a quick ceremony and some portraits, while others want me there for a full day of hiking to more remote spots. Every image is edited in my signature style—clean, sharp, and true to the actual colours of the Scottish Highlands. You will not find heavy filters or unnatural skin tones here. I also provide a consultation call before the day to discuss timings, backup locations for bad weather, and the best light for your specific ceremony spot.

How it works

We start with a conversation about your plans. If you have already booked your celebrant and picked a spot like Brother’s Point, we can move straight to the logistics. If you are still deciding, I can offer advice on which locations work best for photography at different times of the day. On the day, I meet you at your accommodation or the ceremony site. I work discreetly, staying out of the way during the vows to let the moment happen naturally. After the ceremony, we spend some time exploring the area for portraits. This is not a formal photoshoot; it is more of a walk in a spectacular place where I happen to be taking photos. I aim to deliver a preview selection of images within 48 hours so you can share the news, with the full gallery following shortly after.

Local detail

The Isle of Skye is large and requires proper planning. From my studio in Edinburgh (EH6), the drive is roughly 230 miles and takes about five to six hours via the A82 and A87 through Glencoe and Kyle of Lochalsh. If you are staying in Portree (IV51), you are central, but many of the best elopement spots are on the Trotternish Ridge or the Waternish Peninsula. Popular venues for indoor backups or small receptions include The Three Chimneys in Colbost or Edinbane Lodge. For those eloping outdoors, the Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing are iconic, but they are often busy with tourists. I can suggest quieter spots like Talisker Bay or the cliffs near Duntulm Castle (IV51 9UF) for more privacy. It is essential to have a sturdy pair of boots for any Skye elopement, as even the short walks to ceremony spots involve boggy ground and uneven rock.

Questions people ask

What happens if it rains during our Skye elopement?
Rain is a reality on the Isle of Skye. I suggest embracing it for the atmospheric photos it produces. If the weather is truly dangerous or visibility is zero, we can look at shifting the timing by a few hours or moving to a more sheltered spot. I always carry professional-grade weather-sealed gear to ensure the shoot continues regardless of the Scottish elements.
Do you charge travel fees for Skye?
Yes, because Skye is a significant distance from Edinburgh, I charge for fuel and a minimum of one night's accommodation to ensure I am on the island and ready for your ceremony time without the risk of road delays on the day. These costs are transparent and agreed upon upfront so there are no surprises in your final invoice.
How many photos will we receive?
For a standard elopement, you can expect between 150 and 300 fully edited images depending on the duration of coverage. I focus on quality over quantity, ensuring every shot tells part of the story. You get the full set in a high-resolution digital format, suitable for large-scale printing, delivered via a secure online gallery system.
Can you help us find a quiet spot away from tourists?
Skye has become very busy, especially at the Storr and the Fairy Pools. If you want privacy, I recommend avoids the midday peak or choosing lesser-known spots on the west of the island. I have explored many corners of Skye and can suggest locations that offer the same dramatic scale as the famous landmarks but without the crowds and tour buses.
Do we need a permit to get married on Skye?
You do not need a permit for the photography itself in public areas, but you must complete the legal paperwork required by the National Records of Scotland. For specific sites owned by the Clan Donald Lands Trust or others, there may be a small fee or permission required for a ceremony. I recommend checking with your celebrant regarding the specific 'marrige schedule' requirements for the Highland Council area.
