The Edinburgh hospitality sector is crowded. Whether you operate a fine-dining establishment in the New Town or a casual street-food spot in Leith, the quality of your visual assets dictates your footfall. Many restaurants fail to secure the images they need because they lack a cohesive brief or realistic budget. This guide outlines how to streamline your shoot process to ensure every plate look as good as it tastes. Professional food photography is not just about a camera; it is about lighting, composition, and understanding the specific requirements of menus, social media, and third-party delivery apps. By following a structured planning process, you ensure that your investment in Ross Nixon Photography yields a diverse library of usable assets.

Questions people ask
- How many dishes can be photographed in a half-day session?
- A half-day session typically allows for 8 to 12 dishes. This includes time for styling, lighting adjustments, and capturing multiple angles of each plate. To maximise this, the kitchen must be ready to send out plates at 15-20 minute intervals. We can also include 2-3 drinks or interior shots within this timeframe if the workflow is managed efficiently.
- Do you provide food styling services?
- I work primarily as a photographer, but I provide basic styling and plate positioning as part of the shoot. For complex shoots or large-scale commercial work, I recommend hiring a professional food stylist. However, most Edinburgh restaurants find that their head chef is the best person to style the plates, provided we have a clear brief on the desired look.
- What is included in the food photography package?
- The package includes the on-site shoot time, professional lighting equipment, and high-resolution digital editing. You receive a full usage license for your website, social media, and print marketing. Images are delivered in a private online gallery where you can download high-res files for print and web-optimised versions for digital use.
- Can you shoot during service hours?
- While possible, it is not recommended. Shooting in a busy restaurant during service creates logistical hurdles for both the staff and the photographer. I prefer to shoot in the hours before the restaurant opens to the public. This allows us to use the floor space for lighting setups and ensures the kitchen can focus specifically on the 'hero' dishes for the camera.
- How long does it take to receive the finished images?
- Standard delivery for a food photography gallery is 7 to 10 working days. This timeframe allows for meticulous retouching and colour correction to ensure the food looks appetising and true to life. If you have an urgent menu launch, an expedited delivery service can often be arranged for an additional fee.
