Do wedding photographers give you the RAW files?

Ross Nixon Photography does not provide RAW files to clients. We deliver high-resolution, fully edited JPEGs that represent the finished professional standard of our brand and your wedding day.

The short answer is no. Most professional wedding photographers, including Ross Nixon Photography, do not provide RAW files as part of their standard delivery. When you hire an editorial photographer, you are paying for a complete service that includes the capture, the professional selection, and the proprietary editing style that defines the final look. A RAW file is not a finished image; it is an unprocessed data file that requires specialist software like Adobe Lightroom or Capture One to be viewed or manipulated. Delivering these would be akin to a restaurant providing a diner with raw ingredients rather than a cooked meal. My workflow ensures every delivered JPEG meets a specific technical and aesthetic standard before it reaches your hands.

What's included

When you book Ross Nixon Photography for your wedding, you receive a curated gallery of high-resolution JPEG files. These images have undergone a rigorous post-production process. This involves colour correction, exposure adjustments, and applying a consistent editorial grade that ensures your gallery looks cohesive from the morning preparations through to the first dance. RAW files are significantly larger than JPEGs, often exceeding 50MB per frame, and they appear flat, grey, and undersaturated without processing. By providing only the final edits, I ensure that the images you share and print are the best possible representation of my work and your event. Clients receive full personal printing rights, meaning you can take your edited JPEGs to any high-quality lab. Including RAW files would invite inconsistent editing by third parties, which dilutes the brand quality I am hired to provide. My service is a singular vision from the moment the shutter clicks to the final upload. You receive the finished product, ready for high-definition displays and large-scale physical prints, with no technical hurdles or additional software requirements on your end.

How it works

After the wedding day, I transfer thousands of files from my redundant memory card slots to local and cloud storage. The first step is the 'culling' phase, where I remove blinks, duplicates, and out-of-focus shots. From there, the remaining RAW files are imported into my editing suite. I balance the skin tones, manage the lighting shifts from indoor ceremonies to outdoor portraits, and apply my signature editorial look. This process is where the 'magic' of professional photography actually happens. A RAW file is just data; the JPEG is the statement. Once the edit is complete, I export the images at 300dpi, ensuring they are sharp and vibrant. These are then uploaded to a secure online gallery. This streamlined workflow guarantees that you do not have to deal with the storage burden or the technical complexity of raw data, receiving instead a polished collection of memories.

Local detail

Working across Edinburgh and wider Scotland, lighting conditions are notoriously unpredictable. From the dark, moody interiors of the Signet Library or the atmospheric vaults at The Caves, to the harsh, bright winds of the Isle of Skye for an elopement, the RAW file is essential for me to maintain detail in the highlights and shadows. However, these files are only tools for the professional. For instance, an unedited shot inside a dim Edinburgh kirk might look unusable in its RAW state due to the high ISO and yellow tungsten lighting. My job is to take that raw data and transform it into a clean, filmic image that looks natural. I understand the geography of these venues and how to push a file in post-production to get the best result. Providing a client with these unfinished files would result in a disconnect between what you saw on the day and the final photograph. My commitment to local couples is to handle the technical heavy lifting, providing a gallery that stands up to the high standards of Scottish weddings without the need for you to understand file formats or colour science.

Questions people ask

Can I buy the RAW files for an extra fee?
No. I do not sell RAW files under any circumstances. My reputation is based on the quality of the finished images I produce. Releasing unfinished work, even for a fee, allows for the possibility of poorly edited versions of my work circulating, which does not represent the Ross Nixon Photography brand or the investment you have made in my specific style.
Why do some people ask for RAW files?
Occasionally, clients who are hobbyist photographers or work in graphic design want the RAW files to experiment with their own edits. While I appreciate the interest in the technical side, my contract states that only the final, edited JPEGs are delivered. This ensures consistency and prevents a situation where the photographer and the client have conflicting versions of the same event.
Will the JPEGs be good enough for large prints?
Yes. The JPEGs provided are high-resolution files exported at maximum quality. They contain more than enough detail to create large-format wall art, albums, and prints. You do not need RAW files to get professional-grade physical results; the JPEGs I supply are designed exactly for this purpose and are used by pro labs across the UK.
What happens if I want a photo in black and white?
My standard delivery includes a mix of colour and black and white images based on what suits the scene best. If there is a specific colour photo you would like converted to black and white, I am usually happy to accommodate a few reasonable requests post-delivery. This is a much better solution than providing the RAW file for you to convert yourself.
Do you keep the RAW files after the wedding?
I archive the original RAW files for a set period as per our contract, usually one year. This serves as a backup in case you lose your digital copies. However, these are kept for my records and technical safety only; they are not intended for future release or sale to the client.
