How many photos do you get from a wedding photographer?

Ross Nixon Photography typically delivers 400 to 600 edited images for a full day wedding. This volume ensures comprehensive coverage without digital clutter while maintaining a high standard of editorial quality and consistency.

The short answer is that for a standard ten-hour wedding day in Scotland, you should expect to receive between 400 and 600 final images. This figure is a baseline. My approach to photography prioritises the quality of the frame over the sheer volume of the shutter count. Providing thousands of near-identical files serves no one; it makes the gallery difficult to navigate and dilutes the impact of the key moments. Instead, I curate a selection that tells the full story of the day from the preparations through to the dancing. Each image delivered is individually edited to ensure consistent colour, exposure, and composition. This ensures you receive a cohesive body of work that reflects the actual events and the atmosphere of your specific celebration.

What's included

When discussing photo counts, it is important to distinguish between raw files and edited delivery. I do not provide unedited raw files. The editing process is as much a part of the editorial style as the photography itself. In a standard full-day package, every image you receive is ready for print and digital display. The final gallery covers different phases of the day at varying densities. You will see a high volume of images from the ceremony and the speeches where the action is fast-moving and emotional. Portrait sessions are more focused, resulting in a refined selection of 40 to 60 signature images. For the reception and evening party, the focus shifts to candid shots of guests and the dance floor. This tiered approach means you get more photos where they matter most. All images are delivered via a private online gallery, allowing you to download high-resolution files for printing and web-sized versions for sharing. There are no watermarks and no hidden fees to access your completed set of images.

How it works

On a typical wedding day, I might capture anywhere from 2,000 to 3,000 frames. The first stage of my workflow is the cull. I remove duplicates, blinks, and technical tests to find the best representation of every moment. This narrowing down is what creates a professional narrative. If I delivered 2,000 photos, the impact of the best shots would be lost. By refining the selection to roughly 50 to 60 images per hour of coverage, I ensure a fast-paced, engaging viewing experience. For elopements or shorter three-hour bookings, the count is naturally lower, usually ranging between 150 and 250 images. Regardless of the final number, the consistency of the edit remains the priority. My goal is to provide a comprehensive record that captures the big milestones alongside the small, quiet details that most people miss, ensuring your wedding gallery is both thorough and manageable.

Local detail

Working as an editorial photographer in Edinburgh and across Scotland means accounting for the specific geography of a wedding. A wedding hosted at a single venue like The Signet Library or The Balmoral often results in a higher density of shots because no time is lost to travel. Conversely, if we are moving from a ceremony in the Old Town to a reception at a venue like Timberyard or a marquee in East Lothian, the travel time reduces the active shooting window. Weather also plays a part in the final image count. On a clear day at a venue like Borthwick Castle, we may spend more time outside capturing wide environmental portraits and guest candids on the lawn. If the Scottish weather forces us indoors, the shooting style becomes tighter and more focused on the interior character of the building. I know these venues and how to work their layout to maximise the variety of your gallery, ensuring that even in challenging light or restricted spaces, the final delivery meets the expected volume and standard.

Questions people ask

Do you charge extra for more photos?
No. I do not cap the number of images delivered or charge per photo. If the day is particularly eventful and results in 700 high-quality images, you receive all of them. The 400 to 600 range is an honest estimate based on experience, but I will never withhold a good photograph just to stay within a specific limit.
How long does it take to get the photos?
I send a selection of 'preview' images within 48 hours so you have something to share immediately. The full, edited gallery is typically delivered within four to six weeks. This timeline allows for the detailed work required to ensure every image meets my editorial standards before you see the final set.
Will I get photos in black and white?
Yes. Most galleries are a mix of colour and black and white. I choose the finish based on what suits the lighting and the mood of the specific frame. Usually, about 20% of the final gallery is delivered in black and white, though this can vary depending on the aesthetic of the venue or the weather.
Can I see all the photos you took, even the ones you didn't edit?
I do not show or deliver the raw, unedited files or the outtakes. My job is to curate the best work and deliver a finished product. Providing the rejected frames would be like a restaurant serving the vegetable peelings alongside the main course; it detracts from the quality of the final service.
Is the number of photos different for elopements?
For elopements with a shorter duration, the image count is lower but the intensity of coverage remains the same. Shorter sessions of two to four hours generally result in 150 to 300 images. This still provides a complete story of the ceremony and a thorough portrait session at your chosen location.
