How far in advance should I book a wedding photographer in Scotland?

Book your photographer 12 to 18 months in advance for peak Scottish wedding dates. Ross Nixon Photography recommends securing your date early to ensure availability for popular venues across Edinburgh and the Highlands.

The short answer is 12 to 18 months if you want a specific Saturday in June or August. For midweek dates or winter weddings in Scotland, you can often get away with six to nine months. However, the best photographers in the country manage their calendars carefully and rarely take on more than 30 weddings a year to maintain quality. If you have your heart set on a specific editorial style, waiting serves no purpose. Once your venue is confirmed and the deposit is paid, the photographer should be your next priority. My bookings for Edinburgh venues and Highland elopements often fill up a year and a half before the ceremony takes place.

The reality of the Scottish wedding season

The demand for wedding photography in Scotland heavily skews towards the summer months and bank holiday weekends. From May through to September, the competition for Saturdays is fierce. I see inquiries for these dates coming in before couples have even finalised their catering or florist. If you are planning a wedding at a high-demand venue like The Balmoral in Edinburgh or a remote spot on the Isle of Skye, you are competing with local and international couples alike. My schedule follows this trend, and I prioritize bookings that align with my editorial approach. Booking early does not just guarantee a body in the room; it secures the specific vision and reliability you expect for your day. If you leave it until six months out for a peak summer date, you will likely be choosing from whoever is left, rather than who you actually want. This is a significant investment, and rushing the decision because you are late to the party is a gamble that rarely pays off.

How the booking process works

My process is straightforward with no fluff. You get in touch via the website to check if I am free on your date. If the date is open, we have a quick chat to make sure we are a good fit for one another. I do not do hard sells. If you want to move forward, I send over a digital contract and an invoice for a booking fee. Once that is paid, the date is yours and off the market. I do not 'hold' dates without a deposit because it is unfair to other couples who are ready to commit. From there, we stay in touch regarding your timeline and locations. I am available for site visits or planning calls throughout the lead-up to the event. This ensures that by the time the wedding arrives, the logistics are sorted and I can focus entirely on the photography.

Edinburgh logistics and travel times

Operating out of Edinburgh means I am well-positioned for venues across the Central Belt and beyond. For a wedding at Signet Library on Parliament Square (EH1), there is no travel time involved. However, if you are getting married at a venue like Guardswell Farm in Perthshire, I factor in a 90-minute drive from the city centre. For weddings in Glencoe or further north towards Inverness, travel and accommodation need to be discussed as part of the booking. I know the roads well, from the A9 to the narrow passes in the West Highlands. I plan for Scottish weather and traffic delays, ensuring I am on-site well before the start time. Being based in the capital means I can reach most venues in Fife, East Lothian, or the Borders within an hour. This local knowledge is vital for timing your shots to get the best light, whether we are on the Royal Mile or a beach in Gullane.

Questions people ask

What happens if I book less than six months in advance?
If your wedding is on a Tuesday in November, I might still be free. If it is a Saturday in July, it is unlikely. You can always check my late availability, but for short-term bookings, you need to be ready to sign the contract and pay the deposit immediately to secure the slot before someone else does.
Do I need to have my venue booked first?
Yes. I cannot confirm a booking without a fixed date and a confirmed location. The logistics and pricing depend on where the wedding is held. Once you have the keys to the venue for the day, that is the exact moment you should be emailing me to request my pricing guide and availability.
Is the timeline different for elopements?
Elopements are more flexible. Because they often happen mid-week, you can sometimes book me three to four months out. However, for popular elopement spots in the Highlands during the autumn, the 12-month rule still applies if you want a professional who knows the terrain and the best light for those specific locations.
How does the deposit work for long-term bookings?
The booking fee is a percentage of the total cost, paid at the time of signing. This fixes the price at current rates, protecting you from any annual price increases that may occur between the time of booking and your wedding date. The remaining balance is typically due one month before the wedding day itself.
Can I change my date after booking?
If you need to move your date, I will do my best to accommodate the change, provided I am free on the new date. If I am already booked, the original contract terms regarding cancellations will apply. It is always best to be 100% certain of your date before committing to a photographer.
