Are engagement shoots worth it?
Engagement shoots are worth the investment as they build direct rapport with Ross Nixon Photography before your wedding. These sessions eliminate camera nerves, ensuring you feel relaxed and natural during your actual wedding portraits.
The short answer is yes. An engagement shoot is essentially a rehearsal for your wedding day portraits. Most couples I work with in Edinburgh and across Scotland admit to being nervous about standing in front of a professional lens. A pre-wedding session removes that anxiety by teaching you how I work and helping me understand your angles. It is not just about the final images, though those are useful for Save the Date cards or wedding websites; it is about building a professional relationship. By the time your wedding day arrives, we have already spent time together, the ice is broken, and you can focus on the celebration rather than worrying about the camera.

Questions people ask
- What should we wear for our engagement shoot?
- Wear something you feel comfortable in but slightly more considered than your daily attire. Neutral colours and solid tones work best as they do not distract from your faces. Avoid heavy branding, busy patterns, or logos. It is also worth considering your footwear if we are walking in places like Holyrood Park or the cobbled streets of the Old Town.
- Can we bring our dog to the session?
- Yes, I am happy for you to bring your dog. It often helps couples relax as it gives you something to focus on other than the camera. I recommend bringing a friend along for part of the shoot to hold the lead while we take some portraits of just the two of you to ensure we get a variety of shots.
- What happens if the Scottish weather is bad?
- I monitor the forecast closely. If it is light rain, we can usually work through it using হয়ে covered areas in the city or umbrellas for a classic aesthetic. However, if the weather is genuinely miserable or the wind is too high, we will reschedule the session for a better day. There is no point forcing a shoot if the conditions will result in a poor experience.
- How far in advance should we book the session?
- Most couples book their engagement shoot 6 to 12 months before their wedding. If you intend to use the images for 'Save the Date' cards, you should aim for at least 10 months beforehand. This allows time for editing and for you to order your stationery. Mid-week sessions are often easier to schedule as my weekends are usually occupied by weddings.
- How long does it take to get the photos back?
- You will receive your full digital gallery within two weeks of the session. I often send a few 'sneak peek' images within 48 hours so you can see the initial results. The images are delivered via a high-speed download link, making it easy to share them with family or your wedding stationery designer immediately.
