Do I need an engagement shoot before my wedding?

An engagement shoot is not mandatory, but Ross Nixon Photography recommends it to build rapport and lose any camera nerves. It ensures you are relaxed and familiar with my editorial style before the wedding day.

You do not strictly need an engagement shoot, but it is the most effective way to ensure your wedding photos look natural. Most people tell me they hate being photographed or feel awkward in front of a lens. A pre-wedding session solves this by removing the mystery of how I work. We spend an hour or two wandering a location that matters to you, figuring out your best angles and getting the stiff, formal poses out of your system. By the time the wedding arrives, you already know the drills, you know I am not going to make you do anything ridiculous, and we can focus on the actual event rather than the mechanics of the camera.

What's included

When you book a session with me, you are getting more than just a few profile pictures. It is a full trial run for the wedding day. I provide a high-resolution digital gallery of edited images, usually around 40 to 50 shots, delivered via a private link. These are not watermarked, and you have full print rights. Many couples use these images for their Save the Date cards, wedding websites, or even physical prints to display at the reception venue. It also includes my time scouting the location and planning the walk to ensure we get the best light. More importantly, it includes an informal consultation. While we walk and shoot, we talk through your wedding timeline, the specific shots you want at the venue, and any concerns you have about the schedule. It is essentially a strategy meeting disguised as a photoshoot. You get a feel for my pacing and my direct, no-nonsense approach to composition, which saves significant time during the formal portrait window on your actual wedding day.

How it works

The process is straightforward. We pick a date and a location that represents your relationship. I don't do forced studio setups. We meet on-site, usually an hour or two before sunset to catch the best light, and we walk. I will give you clear, specific direction on where to stand and what to do with your hands, but I won't make you hold uncomfortable poses for minutes at a time. The goal is movement and genuine interaction. It takes about twenty minutes for most people to stop thinking about the shutter noise. Once those nerves settle, we get the real shots. Within two weeks of the session, you receive your finished gallery. This allows you to see exactly how I edit—natural colours, sharp focus, and no trendy filters—so there are no surprises when the wedding gallery arrives months later.

Local detail

Edinburgh offers the best variety for these sessions. If you want an urban, editorial look, we start at the bottom of Victoria Street (EH1 2HE) and work our way through the Grassmarket and up the Vennel for that specific view of the Castle. For something more rugged, Arthur’s Seat or the Salisbury Crags are only a ten-minute drive from the city centre. I often take couples down to Newhaven Harbour near the Lighthouse (EH6 4TX) for a coastal, industrial feel which is excellent at dusk. If your wedding is further afield, I regularly travel to venues like Wedderburn Barns in the Borders or any of the coastal spots in East Lothian, which is about a 45-minute drive from my base in Edinburgh. I know the shortcuts through the narrow closes of the Royal Mile to avoid the heaviest tourist crowds, ensuring we get clean shots without a hundred strangers in the background. Understanding the local geography and how the light hits the stone buildings at different times of day is part of the service.

Questions people ask

What should we wear to an engagement shoot?
Wear what you feel like yourself in. Avoid heavy branding or very fine stripes that can cause digital distortion. If you are doing a city walk in Edinburgh, comfortable shoes are a must. You can always bring a change of footwear if you want heels for some of the shots. Neutral tones usually work best against the grey Scottish stone.
What happens if it rains during the session?
It is Scotland, so rain is always a possibility. If it is a light drizzle, we usually crack on as it adds to the atmosphere. If the weather is genuinely miserable, we can either use some of the Edinburgh arches and covered walkways for shelter or simply reschedule for a clearer day. I am flexible with the calendar to ensure we get the best results.
How long does a pre-wedding session last?
Typically, we spend between 60 and 90 minutes together. This is long enough to get comfortable and cover a few different backdrops without it feeling like a marathon. It fits easily into a weekday evening or a weekend morning, and it gives us plenty of time to chat about your wedding plans while we work.
Can we bring our dog to the shoot?
Yes. Dogs are part of the family and they often help couples relax because you are focusing on the pet rather than the camera. Just make sure you bring a lead and some treats. Edinburgh has plenty of dog-friendly spots like Holyrood Park or the Water of Leith that work perfectly for these types of shots.
